I love cake (Never melts (meef)) by jen
1. I'm in the process of cleaning my kitchen. We're going to paint it, it's going to look spiff! We bought a new microwave, so our old college microwave is going back into the basement. I have decided that everything else will go off the countertops too. This has resulted in some creative cabinet rearranging. Along with the needed extra room, and the desire to purge stuff that's been sitting there for years, I've decided I'm tossing a lot of plates too. Hopefully this will result in pulling stuff out of the clean dishwasher instead of having 5,000 loads of crap waiting to go. That's just depressing.
So why is it then, that when I emerge victorious and clear out a space in the cabinet, T comes along and puts something there?!?!
2. My MIL has accused me in her typical smarmy singsong voice, "you're neeestinngg!" and made her lips in such a way that was inviting me to punch them. I've never nested, however I do have spurts of OMGMUSTDOTHISNOW and then I go for 2 weeks where I barely get off the couch, or even get dressed. That's not nesting, that's manic-depressive tendencies. Also, I invited her to come look at the MS project plan I've made in one of my more productive moments.
3. All play and no sloth makes J very very cranky. T came home last night after I'd just cleaned up the kitchen. We've been eating ice cream every night and last night I noticed that he'd been using my cookie dropper as an ice cream scoop. I held it in his face and told him that it was NOT an ice cream scoop and if he wanted me to buy one, I would gladly! He asked me how he was supposed to know. I informed him that there's really nothing in that drawer that he is allowed to use, so it should be pretty simple. He just looked scared. I'm so glad he has a sense of humor about things though. I wasn't REALLY mad... just felt like bitching.
4. The boy was sick this past week. I guess he's been cranky for awhile, but on Monday he decided to surprise me with a bunch of rancid OJ puke. For some reason it didn't send me into convulsions like if it was the girl who did this. Could I be getting better about this whole puke thing or do you think maybe the Atrocious Puke Smell is lesser with some people?? I am a terrible mother when it comes to puking, that's for sure. Everything else I can handle calmly and rationally. Puke makes me run around in circles squeaking and flapping my arms.
5. There are 2 flies in here that won't leave the room and won't stop landing on me! grr.
6. I have been contemplating D's quilt. I made one for L in a toddler/little kid size and I intended to make one for each child. L's was done befoe I met her, but she is very fond of it (though it is currently in the dryer and she doesn't miss it because she is using T's quilt, which I think she likes even better.) I wanted something cutesy with cartoon cars and other similar themes, but got frustrated looking at car fabric because a lot of it is trashy and tacky and not at all what I have in my mind.
Then I saw
This and I MUST MAKE THIS. I know it's expensive, but I bet I can make 2 quilts with all that. I have also been thinking it'd be kind of cute if I could find something in a cute robot/spaceman theme.
7. I'm starting my christmas shopping. Since we already have every fisher price toy known to man, I'm starting to branch out to more unique toys. I think I've done good. I also bought a lot of games - traditional standbys and a few new or unique ones I've found. And I will have to stock up on art supplies. I'm trying to rejuvenate the way the children spend their day.
On that note I've been pulling more things out and having constant activity all day long (which, by the way, is driving me to new levels of insanity) Today we played with play doh. I hate play doh. I have finally become able to deal with the fact that instead of 12 cans of individual colors, we now have 12 cans of muddy brown swirly play doh. However I cannot stand that it leaves little pieces everywhere, and that children don't know how to pick them up. Or that the containers are so hard for them to open and close. Or that the stupid "fun factory" is more trouble than it's worth. Would it really have been that hard to design that thing so the play doh only went in the proper hole and not squished everywhere? Or to make it so that there weren't 4,000 nooks and crannies for play doh to get stuck in, that your finger does not fit in to fish it out? I guess most of my frustration is they can't do it without my help, but I probably wouldn't care (and neither would they) if this was a totally unsupervised activity.
8. I have been on a lego-buying kick. I love to build, and I really love to step on teeny 1x2 bricks in the middle of the night. It's what makes life worth living. So far we've had a lot of fun the past few days with it. Witness:

That's daddy in the middle; with his drunken slut on the left and his cat on the right.

a house L made all by herself (okay I did the bottom rows and showed her how to alternate like "bricks" so they'd stay together. I especially like the deck part.
Also, why bother purchasing toys, when cheap plastic crap from the 80s that you found in your mother's attic works just as good (if not better?)

9. L has been taking big strides in her letter writing, fingerspelling and shapes and counting. Yes that's an odd lumping of things but that's what she's working on. She's constantly fingerspelling letters and asking me if they are correct. And she will write letters on her magna doodle if she is so inclined:

We've been playing with foam shapes and it's just mind blowing how fast they pick up the construction of shapes from other shapes (two half circles, or two squares = rectangle, etc.) The toy has pattern cards, some of which are more difficult than others in requiring shape combining (without any lines to guide!) Okay that's a boring brag isn't it. More for my own record I suppose.

10. D is interested in one thing only: Cars.
11. Also, D is interested in Cake.
