It's well known that I love stories set in the forties/fifties or WWII that involve magic, steampunk or other scifi elements. These days I'm anxiously awaiting the day that
First Squad starts running on TV in Japan.
First Squad, a Russian-Canadian-Japanese project, tells the unlikely story of a group of young Russian soldiers who are pitted against a Nazi invasion force that has mobilised a rather special ally. Apparently the Nazis have raised from the dead a band of medieval crusaders and bestowed them with magical powers. Sounds like a solid story to me! ^_^
I heard about this series from
the Japan Probe weblog who also show the trailer on their site. The music and artwork shown are fscking awesome and I'm really hoping this show will rock. :)

According to a local report, A strange prehistoric creature has been found in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The creature, still unidentified, appeared in a flooded ditch at a construction site. Evidently the deep ditch was inundated by a underground river and sat full of water for quite some time.
The report goes on to say that a few months later, some workers spotted some movement in the water. When they threw some of their lunch in the water, the workers were amazed to see movement in the ditch.
Puzzled, the worked investigated and brought up the creature. When the creature tried to bite, the workers had to kill it with some nearby equipment. The workers estimated the size of the creature at 5 feet.
Now, on boards, people say this is a triops, but I am not so sure due to the size. While this thing may not be 5 feet long like they claim, it's over a few inches, which is how big triops get. Some say it's a horseshoe crab. Others make alien facehugger comments.

I'm very grateful to my buddy
Edmond for introducing me to the Russian folk-rock band
Iva Nova (
their MySpace page).
These five, crazy ladies from Russia make awesome music. Sometimes creepy, sometimes sensual and sometimes just outright fun! I'm sure their live performance must be a blast to see.
In the meantime I'm listening to their CD while hacking away at my schoolwork. And here's a sample for you :)

EDIT:
Speaking of "sensual", I just love their tango
Gorod which simply oozes sex. At least, to me... The song can be heard
in this YouTube clip of a tango demonstration.
