Last monday my project team had its appointment for our oral defense of our essays. This was the first time we've had to do such a thing, since most docent's are happy just reading through our papers. In this case however, the teacher wanted to prod our minds a little about some additional questions.
We came well prepared, as each of us had researched the questions we'd been given. In my case, the teach wanted to know about two things:
1. How would you go about planning a big workload for a depressed child, say for example his final exams?
2. What needs to be done if a depressed child becomes the victim of harassment by his peers?
Our defense went very well, with each of us answering all the questions to the teach's satisfaction. We actually had a good time and there was no stress at all :) In the end we were told that we could count on a 90%, assuming he didn't find any flaws in our final process reports. Nice!
I have to say that the docent did come off quite wishy-washy. We'd told him that our fifth group member had quit school no less than three times and he was still surprised when there was noone to answer the questions about the guy's report in depth. Uhm yeah, we told you? He left? Which also explains why he was about to completely skip my part of the interview, since he thought I was the guy who left. Scatterbrained much? :/ Jeez!...

Today's "I'm bored" craft activity came as a result of someone's offhand remark. I'd been dragging the kids to the pool in a regular bath towel but it's really hard to walk with 3 kids when 2 of them are whining that their towel isn't covering every last bit of their exposed skin! Someone mentioned home-made hooded towels and this piqued my curiosity. I had daydreams of actual nice thick fluffy terry, but it was even easier than that. All you need is a hand towel and a bath towel, and you don't even cut anything, so you could theoretically rip the seams out when you're done. (Though I imagine it'd probably look funny, but I also think you're more wiling to do this if you don't have to cut your towels, I know I was. Even junk towels.)
Don't use junky towels. You'll like the end product and hate yourself for using crappy car wash towels. I didn't make that mistake this time but I have in the past. Use cheap towels if you must. You can buy towels for under $2 apiece, you know.
First you take the hand towel, lay it out landscape style in front of you, and fold it in half right sides together. Then zigzag the top seam (zig zag for durability) Now if you are like me you'll try to finagle the seam so it lies flat, that's fine. But I wouldn't know how to explain that. I only sewed on the flat non-terry border.
Then, keeping it folded, you find the center of the bath towel, and match it to the center of the "hood" you just sewed out of the hand towel. This just shows you where to sew it. Then you can use pins or just hold the ends together till you get it to the machine. Lose one end of the fold (so you don't sew it folded together) and just zigzag it to the bath towel. Again only sewing on the edge, not the terry. I sewed mine so that the "hood" part was on top and the inside of the towel facing up. (the "Inside" is the side with the tag on it. Though it hardly matters.)
Did that make sense? The whole thing took me 5 minutes per towel. It was free for me since someone gave us this set of bright purple towels a few years ago and they came with matching hand towels. I never used them, they were under the guest bath sink until just now. I have another set, so I'll be making another one for J. You could also use contrasting or coordinating colors and patterns.
The other upside of this whole thing is that I learned this purple set came with bath sheets! Ooohh.. bonus for me!

Sewing again (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

Many would declare me mad upon hearing that I've started yet another project for my free time. Thing is: most of the currently running projects offer me little to no relaxation! The
VVE and
Anime 2007 are indeed fun and challenging to work on, but they also place quite a burden on my shoulders: responsibility for a great deal of money and people. Also, studying for my LPIC exams I can hardly count as a hobby either! Who's ever found homework to be an agreeable pass-time?
Of course I'm vegging away in front of the TV a lot, with DVDs and a few series that I'm following. But show me one man who declares such a pass-time as valuable or worthy! Now, thanks to a fellow
Ars Lounge blogger I've found a project that is both useful, educational and it helps clean out the house as well! I'm gonna keep quiet as to what it is that I'm making, save to say that I've picked up sewing again :)
In the past I used to work the ol'
Pfaff Synchromatic 1215 quite often, making
garb for
my bouts in the SCA. When I left the SCA my trusted sewing machine fell into disuse, only being pulled out to make repairs to clothes, or to modify some jeans for Marli.
But that's changed now! I still count the Pfaff as one of my best birthday presents ever and I'm going to see to it that it gets good use during this new project!
EDIT:
Thinking about the SCA got me to search YouTube since they're bound to have some clips about the Society.
And they do :D Looking back I realise that the Anachronists are a well-meaning bunch but that most of the stuff that goes on is about as realistic as Jack-shit. Still, it was a big load of fun while I was still in.
