The Secret Lives of Elevators (Martin Gordon's Blog (cptncelchu)) by Martin

Twelve

The New Yorker has a piece on elevators, perhaps the world's most commonly used and most commonly taken-for-granted mode of transportation. It also recounted the story of a man who was stuck in an elevator for 41 hours after coming back from a smoke break (of which there's a disturbing time-lapse security video). The aftermath of the ordeal ended up costing him his job, his apartment, his money, and all contact with his friends. Remember, kids, smoking will ruin your life.

My favorite passage of the essay was the following, on elevator etiquette:

Passengers seem to know instinctively how to arrange themselves in an elevator. Two strangers will gravitate to the back corners, a third will stand by the door, at an isosceles remove, until a fourth comes in, at which point passengers three and four will spread toward the front corners, making room, in the center, for a fifth, and so on, like the dots on a die. With each additional passenger, the bodies shift, slotting into the open spaces. The goal, of course, is to maintain (but not too conspicuously) maximum distance and to counteract unwanted intimacies—a code familiar (to half the population) from the urinal bank and (to them and all the rest) from the subway. One should face front. Look up, down, or, if you must, straight ahead. Mirrors compound the unease. Generally, no one should speak a word to anyone else in an elevator. Most people make allowances for the continuation of generic small talk already under way, or, in residential buildings, for neighborly amenities. The orthodox enforcers of silence—the elevator Quakers—must suffer the moderates or the serial abusers, as they cram in exchanges about the night, the game, the weekend, or the meal.

LTParis, alive once again (LtParis) by LTParis

OK. I know I know. This site has been going through so many face lifts, so many versions, database v. static, WordPress v. Joomla!, it just never ends.

I’ve decided to resurrect as much data as I could from past versions and put them all here on my new blog and that would not be possible if it were not for the Wayback Archive.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Coke Light Sango (Martin Gordon's Blog (cptncelchu)) by Martin

Coca-Cola Light Sango

On my latest trip to South Africa I flew through Paris where I discovered the best variation on Diet Coke (Coca-Cola Light in most other countries) I've ever had - Coke Light Sango. It's Coke with blood orange flavor (sango as in sang, the French word for blood) and much better than the Diet Coke with Lemon or Lime we have here in the States. A little bit of Googling revealed the Wikipedia page for the drink which states that Sango was the first variation on Coke developed outside of the company's Atlanta headquarters, in Belgium, the country with the largest Coke Light/Diet Coke consumption per capita. If a half-liter bottle didn't cost me €3.80, I would have brought some back with me. For now all I can do is hope that Coca-Cola decides to bring this over to the states.

na na na na slacker! (Never melts (meef)) by jen

1. Good lord, my husband has changed the allergy medications he's on for years and years and suddenly he's getting more sleep than ever, is not tired, goes to bed at 11pm without bitching, does all kinds of housework, and just bought a pink ORGANIZER for the COUPONS he is clipping - mind you it took me 3 years of nagging and a very fat wallet full of coupons he kept "forgetting" to use. And now he's like a super buzzy bee little housewife. And this just HAD to happen during the hottest part of the summer when I am at my fattest and least motivated. I just want to sit on a chair and drool (preferably in front of a window-mounted appliance that's blowing cold air in my direction) and here he is being a good little worker bee. HE'S MAKING ME LOOK BAD!

2. The 3yo came in here and said "I want daddy back" and I said "what, you don't like mommy?" and she said "nooo.. I want daddy back." SIGH.

3. I took my 3 hour glucose test. The husband agreed to stay home with the children. Upon arriving at the lab, I realized my paperwork had ridden up into the passenger side footwell. I couldn't lean far enough to get it (pathetic.) so I had to get out of the car and go in through the passenger side. As I was standing up and closing the door, there was a woman standing there waiting to get into her car next to mine. It was my very pregnant neighbor. Yes we are not only pregnant together but we are due in the same month. She is due on the 29th; I am due on the 15th. I exclaimed "Oh! That's D's birthday" and she of course looked at me like "who the hell is D?" Upon telling the husband about this, he told me "well, she never sees us." Yeah, okay, I never see her either but I know her kid's name! I hate all the fake nice-nice and animosity between us and am going to have to invite her to do something specific.

4. sometimes people amaze me with their lack of ability to form coherent, seemingly obvious but "outside the box" to others, thoughts. For example, the people who whine about taking their kid a carrier style car seat before they are tall enough for a convertible "because it's soooo heavy with my baby in it!" never thought to just leave it in the car as if it were a regular car seat? Granted, do whatever the hell you want, but.. uh.. geez. Also, the people who say "I hate washcloths because they get mildewy when you leave them in the shower." UHH. DON'T LEAVE THEM IN THE SHOWER, dumb ass. Actually that's kind of gross.. I replace my washcloth with each use, thank you very much. (Not because of mildew. Mostly because I wouldn't want to get butt cooties on my face.)

5. I am currently going through boxes and boxes of baby clothes. I know I shouldn't have to buy new clothes for the newbie, but something tells me I will anyway. Or I will buy clothes for the other two and throw in a clearance item or two here and there. Yet, there are 5 trunks I'm currently going through. I have 2 people giving me hand me downs in addition to the gifts I get and the stuff I buy. I was looking through the girl's clothes for this fall and getting giddy. She will be so cute, I can't wait. The boy, haven't gotten there yet. I figured he'd be in 2T pants if he kept it up but I'm not sure now. Maybe he will be. Or the little bugger will mess with me and be in 3T. But only because I have about 35 pairs of 24m, 2-3-4T pants I got all for $2-$3 apiece. I seem to rock the walmart clearance racks.

6. This weekend we are going to pick out paint samples for our next painting phase. I think we will start with the kitchen (has to be primed, I think.) I want something bold, yet "nice" but not "safe." Taupe, but Taupe has become the new Notwhite. I am thinking mocha or chocolate brown (isn't that the same thing) and four shades thereof, to be dispersed along the downstairs. Can't wait to go look. Along with that we will be buying a new microwave, baby... can't wait for that since the little one we bought in college is on its last little legs. It blows the circuit randomly and tends to forget what you just told it to do. For instance I'm constantly going nuts wondering why I just pushed 1-0-0-0 and it just stopped after a minute. And then there was the time I put my pizza in for 2 minutes to heat it up and ended up flinging the charred remains out the window with 9 minutes left on the timer.

7. Still have not discussed the baby naming. Sigh. Zeke is actually a favorite of mine. Never picked up by the husband though. Posted in: house , husband , kids , misc , preg

misc thursday and friday ramblings (Never melts (meef)) by jen

1. I've never put a band aid on my child before last night. Why is she all of a sudden demanding band aids to be put on all her grievous little injuries?

2. "I need cookies I need cookies!"

"we don't have any cookies, I'll make some but you have to wait. What kind of cookies do you want?"

"ROUND. I want ROUND cookies!"

"what kind of round cookies?"

"I want da brown ones. Daddy make da white ones he gotta go buy more!"

(okay to any random stranger that'd imply I burn all my cookies but that's not the case! Just the grocery store pre-cut, throw-on-a-sheet-and-bake kind always come out white.)

3. You know what I hate? I have a web site with the kids' pictures on it, and no one in my family can be bothered to comment or even say anything to me about them. If we ask the in laws if they saw such and such a picture, they will just stare at us like a slack jawed yokel and say "yes." and my inner mind is screaming "AAAAND....??" I have no idea why this bothers me so much though. It's like I am making the effort, they could at least choke out something cute. Friends, and perfect strangers on the internet comment all the time. Sometimes I want to close my flickr account to everyone except people who leave comments! Yes I am vain! leave me be!

4. I am finally feeling the baby move after a few weeks where I guess he was facing the other way and it was really unnerving even though I went through the same thing with both of the other children. I remember when I was this far along with L I was completely and totally convinced she was dead. I laugh when I think about that and I don't know why. I remember thinking one night in the shower, I was totally 100% positively sure this was the case. No, I don't know what is wrong with me.

I have an ultrasound a week from today. I am sooo tempted to find out what it is even though I was adamantly against it the last two times. Someone planted the idea in my mind that maybe I want to know how the other half lives. And hey, if I don't like it, I guess I'll have to have another baby! And not find out! But T will not go for that.

5. I'm starting with the "three years ago today!" and I honestly cannot remember what I did 3 years ago today. I can't remember if I knew I'd be induced when I woke up, or if it was decided later in the day. I had an appointment this day, and ended up meeting the drs at the hospital later, around 6. Well, we were supposed to be there at 6 but we didn't leave the house till 6, after having a meal of macaroni and cheese and leaving my poor puppy alone in his box, not to see him again until a week later (yes someone came to take care of him) I still remember walking into that room, the bed made up nicely, with the monitors draped across it... the afternoon sun streaming through the window. And I vaguely remember that night. And it's so silly because I had D in a room with the same layout, 2 doors down, same day/time-frame, so it all blends together.

Today I have to clean and make some baked goods and put a tricycle together. Sigh. Posted in: birthday , misc , random

The More You Know: Amazon and "obidos" (Martin Gordon's Blog (cptncelchu)) by Martin

Almost every Amazon page has it (correction: had it), but not many actually know what "obidos" really means. Luckily for the curious, the now defunct Google Answers has the answer.

According to someone who supposedly worked at Amazon:

Obidos is the area where the Amazon is "concentrated" - it narrows to
a point about a mile wide and a couple hundred feet deep. It's the
chokepoint of the Amazon. A wry sense of humor turned that to the
naming scheme.

Amazon wrote their own web serving environment because the selection
of scripting/webcontrol languages when they got started was so lousy.
They had to call it something, so obidos it was. :)

So there you have it…

The More You Know: Microsoft and "1033" (Martin Gordon's Blog (cptncelchu)) by Martin

I've seen the number in various install directories for Microsoft products. This shot of a Windows Vista retail box shows the very special number in the URL in the 2nd paragraph and my interest was suddenly rekindled.

According to this MSDN blog, the number is the local identifier for "English (United States)" based on a formula described in the post.

So there you have it…

Xaia enters our world (LtParis) by LTParis

After two failed induction attempts, Xaia Rose Paris was born via. C-section on 1/5/2007 at 00:23. She weighed in at 8lbs and 12oz and is 20.5″ long. And oh can she use her lungs! I don’t think there is a room in the maternity ward that can escape her calls for attention.  This whole thing is so unreal words really cannot do her justice. Both mother and daughter are doing fantastic. These are just preliminary photos, after such little sleep over the past 24 hours it’s time for me to crash. :)

snips (Never melts (meef)) by jen

Sunday, we baked chocolate chip cookies.. I decided to tempt fate (I have bad luck in the chocolate chip department) but they came out good! Last time I baked cookies I ended up with a .. uh.. big cookie puddle that didn't really cook and we ended up scraping into a dish, picking on for a day, and then tossing the whole thing. The boy realized there were cookies in the oven, and stood in front Posted in: kids , misc

misc catchup (Never melts (meef)) by jen

I'm always catching up. Let's see. I cut my hair too short, but I'm still wearing it down. It's been bugging me since the boy was born. Right when he was born I wanted to get it cut and highlighted, but that never happened because he was too little to be away from me for any length of time. Then I blinked, and, poof, a year is gone. I've been hating having my hair back for a LONG time now but Posted in: hair , kids , misc , party

I’m Back (LtParis) by LTParis

After a couple week hiatus I have re-launched LTParis.com. I debated long and hard on which CMS solution I wanted to use (again) and I decided to go with WordPress again after nearly re-launching with Joomla! It’s not that I didn’t want to go with Joomla it was more so that WordPress is a bit easier to add posts and while it’s limited in some features it has a wonderful plug-in for Coppermine.

You will see a lot more posts here on my site with photos especially since I have purchased my new Rebel XTi/400D camera. I hope you enjoy my pictures as much as I like to take them and post process them.

I am purging all but three articles from my original site. Those articles being purged were not that popular and just didn’t fit into my time frame to migrate the articles.

Enjoy!
