Pokemon 151: nostalgia for videogame geeks (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

The Mewtwo shirt
I just read about this at Dark Mirage's blog. I love this idea!

Many of us were in our late teens, early twenties when Nintendo first burst onto the scene with Pokemon in the nineties. Many of us loved the games and some of us (like me and my brother Mistoffelees) also rather enjoyed the TV series and movies. These days we tend to look back on those days with a hint of nostalgia, longing for the days when there were only 151 Pokemon. I had the same with Magic: the Gathering: at one point in time things get too popular and all of a sudden there's a bajillion different cards/characters and the original romance has been lost.

For people like us, Nintendo's come out with a line of t-shirts for the game geek in his twenties/thirties, called Pokemon 151. For now, there's four different shirts but I'm hoping that they'll come out with a few more. I'd really love to get my hands of a few of these shirts though! Maybe I'll commission them from Kaijuu or Niels-sama on their next trip to Japan.

EDIT:
Darn... As Kaijuu points out, even the measurements of the XL shirt are way too small for most Eurofolk and USAdians...

Tonight we Ignite Portland for the Third Time (Tiny Screenfuls (JoshB)) by Josh Bancroft

Tonight is Ignite Portland 3. We’re having it at the Bagdad Theater again, because that venue was just awesome last time, and it fits the spirit and character of Ignite Portland to a tee. The presentation lineup is just stellar, and we have a (hopefully) more streamlined “advance tickets + general admission” that should reduce the size of the lines (which stretched for BLOCKS for Ignite Portland 2) but still let people just show up and get it. The 450+ free advance tickets were gone in less than 24 hours, and there’s every indication that we’re going to pack the Bagdad to fire code again (700+).

If you’re coming, look for me and say “hi!”. I’ll be the geek in the cargo pants, black t-shirt, and bright orange Crocs. ;-) If you can’t make it, you can still partake in the parts of the event that will take place online (the backchannel chatter on Twitter, watch the videos tomorrow, etc.). I just put up a post on igniteportland.com with details on how to experience Ignite to the fullest.

I’m very proud to be one of the organizers of such a cool, popular event. The folks from Legion of Tech (a non profit organization we formed to manage organizing events like Ignite Portand, BarCamp Portland, Startupalooza, and the monthly LoT Happy Hour meetups) are awesome in every way, and I’m humbled and honored to get to work with them (I’m on the board). I can’t wait to see how IP3 turns out tonight, and I’m already looking forward to Ignite Portland 4! :-)

Got a cool sticker I should have? Let me know!

Is your laptop naked? That’s sad. I can send you some stickers if you really, really need some.

Got a pic of your own laptop stickers? Share, so we can all play! :-)

Math geekery ++ (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

I just love this line, paraphrased from here. At least, somewhere over there ^_^

Complex variables and computations are fun and games, until someone loses an i.

Glee! XKCD makes my Friday afternoon a happy one again :D

Impromptu Chicago Geek Meetup Wed. Night at Lou Malnati’s (Tiny Screenfuls (JoshB)) by Josh Bancroft

OK, it’s on. I’m in Chicago for a couple more days, and I’ve got so many friends here that a meetup was inevitable. :-)

Medium Stuffed Deep Dish Giordano's Chicago Pizza

We’re getting together at Lou Malnati’s pizzeria (the one at 429 N Wells) at 7 PM on Wednesday night, 10/3. Everyone is invited, but please RSVP on this page at Upcoming, so we can tell the restaurant how many people are coming.

Story Tracker (Stonetable) by Adam

When I was running WordPress I wrote a small plugin to track stories, word count, status, etc. Part of the reason for switching back to MovableType is that it's running perl and I just love writing perl code. Now that the move is complete, I've started on a Story Tracker plugin. Basically, it gives an author a nice little interface to keep track of a story -- title, word count, genre, if/when it's submitted/published. Basically a glorified spreadsheet. Coming from the Open Source world, I like doing things out in the open where other people can learn from my mistakes. Once those basics are done and I'm generating some nice looking widgets for the sidebar to the right, I'm looking at adding licensing information (Creative Commons) and display options. It's all for fun, but hopefully in the end it'll be useful to someone other than myself. Posted in: geek , website , writing
