Man, what a weekend (Punkadyne Labs (Punkwalrus))

So, a lot happened this weekend. Most have to be behind LJ-Cuts because the contain all sorts of nude photos, impossible geometry, and the rest of the Zapruder film the CIA cut out (the parts with Bigfoot).

Overall, I give this a B, sliding towards a B minus. I saw this thanks to [info]takayla, who gave this as a Christmas present to myself and CR.

There was a lot they did right. I saw the performance at the National Theater, and a majority of the cast was excellent. The musical numbers were stunning for such a small venue, the props were very clever, there was humor both fresh and classic, and enough new material mixed with old that makes seeing this worth it.

For those who have not seen it, it's about 50% of the story of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." The plot is similar where King Arthur makes a quest for the Holy Grail, as deemed by God, and picks up his knights along the way. Some of the scenes from the movie are in there, albeit altered somewhat. The rest is completely different (ha ha). There's a new main character, "The Lady of the Lake" and her "Laker Girls." They break the fourth wall a lot; for instance there's a musical number where the Lady of the Lake is upset she hasn't been in Act II until just now. The orchestra gets cut off a lot. Mentioning how expensive certain sets were, and how the wires holding up Tim the Enchanter were "impressive and completely undetectable." There are a lot of local DC and current event jokes, so I assume that the DC cast had some flexibility with this.

The cast I saw were, for the most part, very good. The one glaring exception was the man playing Arthur, who dressed like Tim Curry, sounded like Tim Curry, but performed his part with such a rehearsed process, you'd think he was tired of the part and just wanted the evening over with, so he switched to autopilot. His lines lacked a punctual panache, which is essential for comedy. He rambled through his parts with emphasis on the last sentence only, which was awkward. In contrast, the person who played Sir Robin was excellent, and the Lady of the Lake (who was a substituted understudy that evening) was perfect. The rest of the cast supported well, and I am not sure they could have done any better because their parts were fairly unimportant to the main story.

There were certain scenes where I went, "How are they going to pull this off? How will they show the black knight getting ALL his limbs cut off? Oh, very clever!" use of props spanning the passing of time were particularly creative.

A few times the scenes suddenly skewed from the scenes in the movie. The French taunting, for instance, ends with a dance number by every French stereotype they could dress someone up in. The Knight's who No Longer Say "Ni" said a few verses from "My Humps," and demanded King Arthur put on a Broadway production (but can't, because "they don't have any Jews," which led to a VERY impressive musical number that spoofed "Fiddler on the Roof").

Those who are rabid quoters of the movie will cringe when the lines change ever so slightly. But will laugh at lines that don't seem like they would be funny to anyone else not familiar with their skits, lines like "beautiful plumage..."

The audience left a lot to be desired. While most of the audience seemed to be people who would appreciate Monty Python, there were a lot of people that struck me as... well, not the type. Old people in expensive fur coats, rich businessmen with hair plugs and their model-thin dates, and a fair amount of young children. But everyone seemed to have a good time, so perhaps the fault is my perception. Sadly, the rail-thin model next to me was wearing too much perfume. The man in front of my son farted when he laughed. The pre-teen girls in front of me were playing a Nintendo DS. A kid behind us looked like a dead ringer for Carrot-Top at age 7.

All in all, very funny. CR and I had a great time.

I attended a great Christmas party in McLean at [info]anyarm's house. It was part of a sisterhood year end event that [info]takayla hosts. There's little to say about it except I had a great time. I watched a dog the size of a greyhound wrestle with a Chihuahua puppy. As part of a blind gift exchange, I got a pizza set, complete with plates, cutter, and pan. yes, it was after Christmas, but no one could find time before Christmas that wasn't in mid-November.

My friend Jason is in town to see his parents. He's a great friend I have known since high school. We met in astronomy class back in 1986, and both of us wanted to be astrophysicists. Well, I was suddenly without parents at age 18 and had to get a crummy job to eat, but he went on to college and is now an Astronomy Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona. He used to always stay at our house over New Year's, but in the last few years, has been staying with assorted relatives and just visiting us.

I wish I hung out with him more. I mean, in many ways he hasn't changed since we were teens, but in others he's got so much more experience. He teaches astronomy and physics with a bunch of other physicists and engineers where he is now. He's probably going to be in Daytona for a while, since he just bought a house, and there's a sales slump. Where he lives, you can watch shuttle launches go by overhead, even though Cape Canaveral is over 100 miles south. We have to visit him... as long as we don't have to drive through Jacksonville... Christmas haul (Punkadyne Labs (Punkwalrus))

How did you guys make out? I got the following gifts:

- Calendar with Penguins on it
- "Planet Earth" HD DVD
- A huge Lego skeleton ship
- A small Lego Tie fighter Keychain
- Paparazzi action figure set
- Large, glow-in-the-dark, rubbery brain
- "Alice in Wonderland" DVD - The 1980s tacky TV version (was on my wish list)
- Game Warzone 2100 (well, a gift to myself, it's free and fun - http://wz2100.net )
- An 8-ball that talks like Stewie Griffin from "Family Guy."
- Assorted books from my Amazon.com wish list
- Gift card to Sears (I am going to get a circular saw)
- An OLPC, which was sort of a combo birthday/Christmas self-gift and a donation to a worthy cause... not that I got mine yet...

But the big gift for the day was a Monty Python's "Spamalot" T-shirt and tickets to see it at the National Theater this Friday! Woo hoo! Like orchestra seats and everything, only 20 rows back. Thanks, [info]takayla! Posted in: christmas , gifts , spamalot

Christmas with the family (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

Yesterday we celebrated Christmas Eve with my family. Everyone who wasn't stuck in a foreign place (Finland, the US) was there, so we had a nice little gathering :)

Dinner was great, as always, and of course I overate. The salmon starters were alright, but (like every year) the ham was awesome. Apparently my dad had some Finnish minister bring over a Christmas ham from Finland, just in time for Christmas. Awesome stuff and it's a shame that I couldn't bring any with me. I mean: it'd spoil on the way to Japan ;_; By the end of the night I was falling over with both sleep and stomach cramps :D Ah, you gotta love the holidays.

It was very nice to be together with the whole family again. :) I would've posted a picture, if my camera and SD reader weren't packed already :p

Santa hat (Punkadyne Labs (Punkwalrus))

Working Christmas Eve

Yes, I am at work. We get off early at 2pm today, which threw a monkey wrench into [info]takayla's day. Right now, as I type this, a bunch of my work mates have gone to get Chinese food. I leave at 2:30 so I can get a ride home.

The Metro was virtually deserted this morning, and I am not surprised. I had forgotten that being in a car with only a few people is kind of nice. Normally my 7am commute is packed to the walls with bitter and angry government workers. I am lucky that I get to sit most of the time. It's because I get on at Vienna, and sometimes the car doesn't fill up before I get to it. But two stops down, it's standing room only. And on some days, notably when it rains or the train has been slow, by Ballston, about 4 stops down, the cars become too packed to get more people on. The Metro simply cannot handle the riders it has anymore. How do they handle this increased business? Why increase their fares, of course. :(

I wore a Santa hat to work. [info]anyarm, who gave me a ride to work, screamed, "SANTAAAA!!" and hugged me, which was a great way to start the morning. ALSO, Mars is the closest to Earth until 2016, and I showed her and Brian Mars, Venus, and the full moon in the morning dawn. Mars is so close and bright, you can tell it's orange. Venus, as always, is a dirty white due to its high albedo. I also explained a little about the ecliptic path. I wish I had become an astronomer sometimes :(. Work work work... (Punkadyne Labs (Punkwalrus))

Yesterday, I went into the attic to get Christmas decor, and saw a total mess. It was like a tornado went through my attic. I sent most of an hour trying to sort things out. Luckily, only a few boxes opened and spilled out. The majority of the chaos seemed to be whole items placed all over.

I have a set of Ikea chairs I put in storage that were strewn about. Outdoor chair cushions were also all over the place. There were a score of empty boxes for small appliances and computer parts, which I assume we put up there for warranty purposes. The upshot to those boxes is they are very sturdy, and I am moving to a new den, so... yay for that. Our insulation is a mess, but now a different mess than it was last time I looked. It's like the insulation the COX idiots removed is now back (sort of), but insulation is peeled up on other places. I really, really have to get that attic re-insulated. There was a new hole in a roof. It's not a hole per se, but it's a gap that is only protected by one shingle. I have to fix that, too. I am surprised there are no leaks. The former owner's crap is still up there: mostly a few old pieces of clothing, some childhood art, and carpet remnants.

I got everything down that needed down. CR packed up Christmas last year, and did a pretty good job, I must say. I am very happy with his work.

[info]takayla, [info]anyarm, Brian, CR, and I set up the tree. It looks great. I did some other decorating, but then Latte got into it, and messed it up (not the tree, just a garland thing I'd been working on).

I did a lot of housework until about 3am. Just the usual clothes, kitchen, trash, vacuuming, cat box, and moving more stuff to my new den. I woke up at noon, and I haven't been able to "get it together" to finish a lot of my work. I started laundry, did some more dishes to the sink is almost empty, and probably will continue this trend until late evening.

I have to do shopping, though. Hmmm... and I keep getting paged from work. Posted in: christmas , decorations , housework

Christmas Cookies (Never melts (meef)) by jen

Today I made cookies with the children. The recipe leaves much to be desired but to them sugar is sugar, right? Next time I'll make the dough and the icing ahead of time and just DO it. That's what I did once and it worked nicely but they don't nap any more. D was up all night and he needed a nap badly but he's being a defiant little...well.. jerk... and I spent most of the day trying to get him to nap. Eventually we hit a point where I really didn't want him to nap because he'd be up all night, but I really just wanted him to Go Away and Sit Still somewhere for an hour! The tiredness plus the sugar made him really obnoxious and I didn't like him one bit.

I let them do pretty much everything with the cookies, not worrying about messes or ugly cookies, since that's what my mother would probably do (before she flipped out and ran in the other room with a bottle of cuervo.) (or bailey's irish cream. She drinks weird things. what do I know.)

Before the mess. We mixed the dry ingredients in the bowl and this is when I realized it'd be more fun for ME if I did this ahead of time. But.. no naps.. when would I do it? pft.

L's 2nd favorite part!

By this time, he was having a tantrum. When I said we'd be making cookies, he thought there would be cookies a lot faster! He kept insulting me by going in the fridge and pointing out daddy's obviously superior cookies. The pre-made ones you shake out of the box. HEATHEN. The girl and I pretty much forced him to do this. He didn't really seem to think it was cool at all.

We HAD TO EAT THEM NOWWWWW. I thought I"d try to decorate a couple and get him out of my hair but it didn't work out that way.

I also made the mistake of leaving the kitchen unattended for a few moments.

Ahh, synchronized decorating.

Overall, L had a lot more fun with this part. D was eating sprinkles and eating his cookie instead of decorating it. Eventually after I stopped giving him cookies, he got bored and went inside.

Enjoying the fruits of her labors, I guess.

T can probably guess which ones I did and which ones he probably doesn't want to think about while eating.

xmeve (Never melts (meef)) by jen

Went to CT today for christmas eve. I had been annoyed by the weather all week but today was a nice day, I guess even the forces that be didn't want to hear me whining. And what's better, there was no one on the roads. Piled the children and gifts in the car and left the mutt home, but got guilted about that fact by the husband for most of the ride up there. Come on, it's not like I decided to Posted in: christmas , kids

Merry Christmas (Never melts (meef)) by jen

Well now I'm all sad that it's over! We didn't get all the stuff in the car from CT, so we have some stuff coming to us. All the stuff was piled on the edge of the room as per usual.. then our stuff. It took us hours to open it because they wanted to play with each thing as it came out. I just sat in the couch and enjoyed it. Eventually they went off to play with stuff but T was anxious to have Posted in: christmas , kids

Happy holidays everyone (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

The catalogue photo for Marli's new shirt
I can't believe it! This is the very first time in the five years that I've been running my personal website that I'm going to wish my visitors a merry Christmas. How the heck did I never do that before?!

So there you have it: merry Christmas to you lot! Or "happy holidays" if it pleases you better...

Marli and I exchanged our pressies a bit early, since we'll be visiting family all weekend and we'd rather do it in private :)

Marli got me two new games for the NDS (WarioWare and Worms), plus a replacement screen protector for when the original gets worn out. Of course, I'm _very_ happy :D

And I had the most blinding flash of insight when it came to getting her a present! That's usually very rare, as I'm quite dense ;_;

Pictured above is the shirt that Marli bought especially for this holiday season. She'll be wearing it with a black suit that looks very smart on her. Now I realised that she didn't have any jewelry to match the shirt, so I went out to my favorite jewelers: Esmann Juweliers. Unfortunately they don't have a website, but that isn't very odd given that they deal in antiques and handmade jewelry. They most definitely are not the run-of-the-mill jewelers like Lucardi or another high street shop.

Anywho, over at Esmann's I found these wonderful flower earrings, with petals and a center of deep red garnet. Very nice!

And now we're off to a busy weekend :)
* Tonight we'll go to my father's for the traditional Christmas dinner! So, thankfully, what I'd reported earlier hasn't come true entirely!
* Tomorrow we'll be at Marli's mother's place for the traditional Christmas day with them.
* Tuesday we'll be back at my dad's to meet up with his girlfriend's family, for more company and merriment. Posted in: christmas

Setting up for the holidays (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

Our Christmas tree this year
In contradiction to my original plans I did in fact visit Sun Microsystem's Christmas extravaganza this year. I'd never been to their Christmas parties before and colleagues had always told me about how great it was, so I just had to go. My luck would have it that this year's event was a bit of a doozy :( I was told by friends that the event had been much larger in previous years, with many more stalls showing off all kinds of neat things.

I did finally get to see a real live Thumper though. That's one mean looking box! Twenty-four terabytes of storages in one 4U enclosure. Nice!

Anywho: it was nice meeting up with some people whom I hadn't seen in years, mostly folks from my ING Bank days. And it was great of Sun to continue their long standing tradition: gifting every visitor of the event with a clouted Christmas tree!

So now our house smells of pine and we have a nice looking tree in our den. She's pretty decent to look at, although I'm still waiting for the branches to sag down a little. That should give her some more body.

What else is there?
* This evening I'll be picking up my new glasses at the opto.
* We're still on the hunt for a few more Christmas' presents.
* This Saturday I'll start cleaning the house in preparation of our traditional New Year's dinner.

For over five years now it's been tradition to have a few of our very best friends over for dinner on New Year's eve. We'll gather four to eight people, me and Peter'll cook a slamming dinner and we'll have fun and games into the night. I'm already looking forward to it!

Though this year I've promised Peter to leave the Dancing Stage: Mario Mix in its box :D I don't think he enjoyed that all that much last year. Posted in: christmas , new year's eve , sun microsystems

Death of a family tradition (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

Cailin, moping with a present in his hand
For as long as I remember my family has always celebrated Christmas Eve together.

When I was a kid, our grandparents used to come over from Rotterdam and Nonna (my Finnish grandmother) would fly over. We'd have a great, big dinner with all of us. After dinner we'd all go outside to look for Santa Claus, if we could see him fly by in his sleigh. And invariably, when we'd return to home, there'd be a great, big pile of presents underneath the Christmas tree. :)

Over the years the group has dwindled (grandparents both died years ago, Nonna has gotten too old and sickly to travel, parents got a divorce and my brother Niklas has moved to Finland), but still we continued to celebrate the Eve.

That is, until this year.

My sister and her boyfriend will be in Finland for the holidays (I'm jealous!) and none of my father's girlfriend's kids can make it on the 24th either. And so, yesterday evening my dad asked if it would be alright if we came 'round on the 26th instead. Then, he said, we'd have a much bigger group.

And naturally we agreed, 'cause that's what you do. I mean, he was feeling bad enough as it is about forgetting to arrange for a nice stay-over somewhere (the original plan was for us and them to go to some far-away part of the Netherlands).

So that's how a great family tradition finally came to its end.

... *sigh* ... It really does make me sad, 'cause I have so many good memories of those evenings...

But! Screw all this sulking! Marli and I have decided that next year we won't let this happen! We will continue the tradition instead, dragging as much family as we can into our home on the 24th! There'll be dinner, drinks, snacks and presents! Hooray!

EDIT: I really don't mean to be blaming my dad for this, if that's how it sounds. It's just a matter of circumstances. Posted in: christmas , family tradition , moving on
