The trouble with old houses (Kilala.nl (Cailin Coilleach)) by Cailin Coilleach

Meh, this is what I don't like about living in an old appartment! >[

The electric wiring is decrepit because it's never been renewed since the nineteen-sixties. Most of the outlets are without earthing, the housing for the outlets in the walls are coming apart and most of the wiring is old and has gone crooked through all of its use. Some of the switching material is also ancient and is probably from the eighties.

Case in point: the switchbox that connects our washer and dryer to the mains power. It's one of those old dealies, where you pull on a wire to flip the switch. I don't know what happened, but while I was away to pick up Marlijne it seems the thing burnt through D: EEK! I'm glad we didn't come home to a burning appartment!

I reckon I'll replace it on Monday with a simple connection box. We have no need for a switch there and I assume that it's better to have as little moving/open parts in a bathroom as possible.

*sigh* The thing is, I'd love to give the whole house an overhaul, but there's three things keeping me from it.

1. I don't have the required skills to do it myself.
2. Hiring someone to do it costs money that we don't have.
3. The overhaul will require hacking up the walls, which means we'd have to redeco the house as well. More costs that we cannot afford.

I guess we'll have to try and do a few touch-ups here and there in the next few years.
